The kid was 11; his name was Bert Cambridge. He liked drawing with chalk on sidewalks and hated computers. Steve Conner, future HEPH FOUNDATION founder, showed Bert what he could do with a computer. Twenty-five years later, Bert is an Emmy Award-winning editor. He was the first of over 5000 interns and mentees who Steve inspired to learn technology skills and pursue STEM occupations.
There are an estimated 2.4 million STEM jobs that are unfilled. Out of 100 STEM occupations, 93% of them had wages above the national average. Employment in computer occupations is projected to increase by 12.5 percent from 2014 to 2024

It’s not purely fun and games though: we integrate science and mathematics concepts into design-based learning engineering practices that will help students succeed in school and beyond. Over 40% of our after-school program attendees improve their reading and math grades to help them succeed in school. STEM classes help students to acquire the computational thinking and problem-solving skills necessary for all professional careers.
